Black Column in a Glass Box

A friend bought an old building for his machine shop, and behind the building, under an overgrown weed patch, was a pallet of 12″ square 1/4″ thick glass squares. He agreed to let me help him out by riding him of the glass, and I scoured the thrift shops buying the cheapest 33 RPM albums I could get my hands on, and glued a record between each piece of glass. The wood holds it all together.

As the viewer walks around the piece, optics cause the records to take form as a column inside the glass, and then, 90 degrees later, to disappear.

The effect is the same in all light types and all seasons. Very cool. I love working with glass.

Here you can see how the column has effectively disappeared completely. I think this piece is the most dependent on its environment of all the pieces in the garden. And yes, it is very heavy. Forklift heavy.
