The most spectacular doors I’ve ever driven across the country with my son, camping all the way, to install. I’ve long worked with a wonderful metals fellow, Mark, and together we’ve done some very cool things, but this one tops the list. I do the design and the finish, and help when the work needs it, and generally the installation.

These walls are two feet thick, and the space between the two outer walls is covered by the massive door jam and arch. This beautiful California winery was ours for almost two weeks as we refinished the doors. The caretaker had not quite followed the plan, and rust had begun to set in. We fixed the problem and had a great time doing it. All fathers should get to go cross country camping with their kids.

The texture on the jam was made with an old hydrolic Industrial Era trip hammer. Kicked our butts is what it did. But what a beautiful texture it gives half inch thick solid steel.

Even though they are hollow, each door still weighs just over six hundred pounds. They are properly hung, and a child can open and close them.

The lock is a very tight fit, and needs to be oiled regularly to slide as nicely as it did when we made it. Locked, nobody is getting in.

The view from the inside. If there is ever a reason to close them, they still look good.

Note thye hinges. The doors close in the middle of the two foot thick wall. The hinges are L shaped and swing the doors into place behind their mounting point. This was a great trip. Thanks, client!
