I’ve never known where this image came from- as though a painter of invented images knows where any of them come from. I painted with only black, white, and yellow ochre for a year or two, after my paints were stolen from my panel van, and I was flat broke as a student with a wife and a baby. I had read that in his lean years Rembrandt only used those three colors.
