This table is now in San Francisco. I am going to see if the designer has shots taken since the project was complete. The designer managed to find a 3/4″ thick glass top. I enjoy traditional challenges.
A table base like this works both indoors and out.
The lifting pins allow me to raise or lower the piece to the best height for working.
Completely hand made. Knowing how to break down a form into small parts enables a carver to carve pretty much anything.
The key is to start with a square and true block, since stone carving is a subtractive art. If a carver is measuring in from a surface that isn’t accurate, the results won’t be accurate either.
This table was on the docket when a newbie, Jason, came on. Jason was great, but at first he had what we laughingly called “pizza boy hands”. Took a while to toughen him up. I ordered the stone in for the legs of this table full length, not cut to size, so that Jason could get a bit broken in. The piece “Tapestry” in the Sculpture section of this site is the result.
I designed and built both the table and the fireplace, and a fireplace in a room not visible from this vantage. The table is fully epoxied together; there is no flex in the legs.
I love doing furniture. Bringing the mass of the Earth into the house. Rocks have a strange ability to command presence and rightness in a room.
“Design me a table fit for the Devil’s kitchen, with a Cole Porter accent”, said the client. “If you can do it I’ll buy it”. Here it is.
Getting it though the front door was a major effort. It is a 7′ square tp, 4″ thick, and the door was just over big enough to get it in on the hypotenuse. It’s a long story, but we brought it in on this gallows, lowered it over the completed base, and then cut the axle pins off and parted with the gallows, the top in place. Plans must be prepared for challenging things.
The bronze inlays in the top and corners are aligned with lights that were installed in the ceiling to add drama. Perfect!
This floor was laid by an absolure master. It is decades old and still perfect. I love being part of this room, and to all who have st around this table for dinner… I hope you liked it.
