these Ionic capitals were crumbling- literally falling apart. Hard to tell from this view, but they are about 7′ wide, three feet tall- the chunks falling could have killed somebody. Dale was hired to cut out the rotton stone, glue new chunks on, and carve the chunks to replace what he’d cut out. Carving that high was a riot!
